We spend a lot of money furnishing our homes. From carpets and hardwood floors, to upholstered furniture and artwork, it all adds up. That’s why it makes sense to preserve our home furnishings as long as possible by protecting them from the sun because sun damage occurs indoors as well as outdoors. The sun’s harmful rays can damage and fade indoor furnishings like furniture, fabrics, flooring, and artwork, causing them to deteriorate and fade. Luckily, window film prevents sun damage indoors, so your home furnishings look great longer and have to be replaced less often.
WILL WINDOW FILM MAKE MY HOME DARK?
We want our homes to have lots of bright natural light to make them more welcoming and cheerful. That’s why window film is the optimal solution. Rather than covering windows with heavy curtains and blinds, which can make your living spaces dark and dreary, window film does the opposite. It allows windows to remain uncovered and your views unobstructed. Furthermore, it allows a significant percentage of natural light to filter in, while simultaneously blocking the sun’s harmful rays.
WHY DOES THE SUN CAUSE FADING?
Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun – the harmful ray’s not visible to the human eye – contribute to fading. If you’ve noticed that hardwood floors seem to fade faster in areas of direct sunlight, UV rays were busy at work. Some fading also results from the heat and light that can be seen and felt from the sun.
However, sunlight isn’t the only thing that causes fading. Non-sun-related factors that contribute to fading include chemicals from cleaning, age, dye fastness, and physical wear and tear.
The rate at which an item is prone to fading can also be affected by the type of material it’s made from. When comparing fabrics, for example, natural fabrics like cotton will generally fade faster than synthetic fabrics – created from man-made fibers – which tend to hold their dye better.
WHAT HOUSEHOLD FURNISHINGS ARE PRONE TO FADING?
Home furnishings that are prone to fading include natural wood floors, carpets and rugs, wallpaper, window treatments, furniture, fabrics, artwork, and photographs. Some of these items are expensive to replace or irreplaceable if they are one of a kind.
Of course, the items that are nearest windows or that get direct exposure to sunlight from windows are the most vulnerable to fading, sun damage, or sunspots.
HOW WINDOW FILM PREVENTS SUN DAMAGE & FADING
Window film works by blocking up to 99% of the sun’s damaging UV rays and reducing visible light and solar heat, addressing all three of the top causes of fading.
In fact, window film works so well to prevent fading that it’s currently used at museums and historic homes around the world to help protect valuable artifacts and collections. Not to mention, the film works while preserving old windows and without changing the look of these buildings.
It is important to note that no solution can entirely prevent fading. However, window film will dramatically slow the progress of fading to keep your furnishings looking their best for longer.
